Massive stone hewn iron smelter in Tahawus. The iron operation here was actually rather unsuccessful because the ore was "contaminated". Years later it would be discovered the contamination was actually titanium in the ore. National Lead was interested in the ore in the mine for that very reason. Titanium dioxide is used to make pure white pigment. Incidentally, titanium dioxide is also used in making smoke grenades and smoke screens, which played a strategic role in World War II and beyond. You can guarantee that if the US needed titanium dioxide today, this mine would pop right back into use. (From MacIntyre Redevelopment aka National Lead)
