Phone booth bank near the Persian room. This phone booth is where my fascination with telephones began around third grade. Some older kids were hanging around the booth, the phone ringing inside. Answer it, they said. I answered the phone and a continuous tone was all that was there. They did something and made it ring again, then told me to answer it again. It was a tone again! I begged them to tell me how to do that, and they did. The ringback number for hardlines in the 845 area code (formerly 914 in the Pines' heyday) was to dial 660, plus the last 4 digits of the phone number; when you hear the 'dial tone', hang up for a moment or hit your phone's flash button. You will hear a tone, then hang up. Your phone will ring. The tone will be on the other end. Also, when you hear the dial tone, you can perform a keypad test by dialing all 12 keys on your telephone keypad (0 through 9, * and #). You will hear the tone beep twice if your keypad is working. The more you know! (From The Pines Hotel 2004)
