Me jumping over the Hudson River. That's right, the mighty Hudson, when you're this far upstate, is nothing but a dribbling stream that runs through a culvert pipe not far from here. (From MacIntyre Redevelopment aka National Lead) Taken 2005-05-01 15:43:41 Posted 2007-12-30 11:42:50 by peter |

Ah yes, no water treatment plant would be complete without an incandescant bulb, wrapped in chicken wire, on top of an upside down lamp reflector leading to a pipe that does to the ground. This far north, the Hudson River flows through a culvert. This is one pipe in that culvert. (From MacIntyre Redevelopment aka National Lead) Taken 2005-05-01 13:39:43 Posted 2007-06-27 18:12:32 by peter |

Massive stone hewn iron smelter in Tahawus. The iron operation here was actually rather unsuccessful because the ore was "contaminated". Years later it would be discovered the contamination was actually titanium in the ore. National Lead was interested in the ore in the mine for that very reason. Titanium dioxide is used to make pure white pigment. Incidentally, titanium dioxide is also used in making smoke grenades and smoke screens, which played a strategic role in World War II and beyond. You can guarantee that if the US needed titanium dioxide today, this mine would pop right back into use.
